Kūkupa Cottage

Russell, Bay of Islands

Welcome to Kūkupa Cottage

Kūkupa Cottage is owned and run by Iain and Hamish. Hamish's connections to Russell go back fifty years to when his family arrived from the US. Iain is a more recent immigrant having arrived in 2007 from the UK. We're excited to have found a home in Russell and we look forward to sharing our little part with visitors.

Kūkupa Cottage is located in central Russell just 200-400 meters from most of the cafes and restaurants of our beautiful village. Around the corner is the historic Christ Church, the oldest church in NZ, the local museum and Pompallier Mission and Printery. We're also a short two minute level walk from the wharf with passenger ferry services and boat tours. In addition to the village waterfront, Russell has other beautiful sandy beaches like Long Beach at Oneroa Bay which is just a 1 kilometer walk or drive.

We've named our home after the kūkupa or native wood pigeon also known as the kererū. At certain times of year you may see kūkupa in the garden feeding or sometimes they're higher up the hill above our home on the Zig-Zag track.

Our downstairs bedroom suite is called the Garden Room because of its lush sub-tropical surrounds. You may see or hear tūī, weka, or piwakawaka fan-tails as you sit on the private deck. The bedroom has a king size bed, a smart tv, wifi internet via fibre, and a space to dine should the weather be inclement. There are also breakfast facilities in the room and we provide cereal, toast, tea, and coffee.
